Kaleidoscope Creative Community
Everyone does something creative, but no one wants to call themselves an artist.
I saw the need for a creative community for those who dabble, who might hesitate to call themselves an “artist,” who choose collective wellbeing over capitalist burnout, and who don’t think there should be a paywall for being a villager.
I founded Kaleidoscope Creative Community to fill this gap: a place for people to play, explore, learn, and create together without pressure or expectations.
Kaleidoscope hosts free creative events for adults, including a monthly art club, workshops, group outings, and partnered events with local businesses and organizations. Designed for people of all skill levels and backgrounds, Kaleidoscope events are a safe, welcoming place for people to create and to connect.
The challenge
Gaining visibility and establishing itself as a trusted community within the Fort Worth art scene by informing the public of its services and building connections.
The solution
Open Streets, a local festival dedicated to community building, public health, and free family-friendly fun.
From concept to execution, I directed the development of a community art activity, including the application and proposal, event planning and preparation, and site coordination and activity facilitation.
The activity: a hands-on, collaborative paper mosaic
-
Rather than simply telling people who Kaleidoscope is, the mosaic activity shows them and invites them in to the world. It highlights Kaleidoscope’s purpose of building community through creativity, reflects the core belief that everyone is inherently creative, and encourages people to actively express and experience this creativity and community.
-
With a thoughtfully designed space and diverse range of materials, the activity encourages real-time conversation and intentionally includes people of all ages and artistic skill levels. While Kaleidoscope is non-hierarchical, members were available as needed to provide instructions, answer questions, and build connections.
-
The activity and space were designed to be interactive and photo-friendly, encouraging participants to share their creation on social media.
The outcome
With a high engagement rate, the mosaic activity fulfilled its goal of gaining visibility, building credibility, and increasing brand awareness. Because the activity was designed to be a sharable experience, it also led to wider reach and visibility on social media.
These results provided Kaleidoscope with the necessary momentum to host successful events and build a strong creative community. Following Open Streets, there was an impressive increase in social media engagement, social media followers, and event attendance.
