Kaleidoscope Creative Community

Context

For all intents and purposes, Fort Worth, Texas, has a blossoming art scene: world-class museums, regular art markets, plentiful classes and workshops, and a growing public arts program. However, after years of being an active participant in this scene, I identified a need that did not seem to be met. Creative activities that were accessible and inclusive and that held space for a community to come together and grow were lacking. After identifying this gap in the market, I founded Kaleidoscope Creative Community, a place for people to play, explore, learn, and create together without pressure or expectations. Kaleidoscope hosts free creative events for adults, including a monthly art club, workshops, group outings, and partnered events with local businesses and organizations. Designed for people of all skill levels and backgrounds, Kaleidoscope events are a safe, welcoming place for people to create and to connect.

As a new organization with minimal visibility, Kaleidoscope needed a way to inform the public about its existence and to educate them on the services it provides. I saw a means to achieve this with the local community festival Open Streets, a day dedicated to community building, public health, and free family-friendly fun. This event aligned closely with Kaleidoscope’s values and was an opportunity to provide a free activity that reflected Kaleidoscope’s core belief that everyone is inherently creative.

From concept to execution, I directed the development of a hands-on, collaborative art activity, including the application and proposal, event planning and preparation, and site coordination and activity facilitation. The activity was designed to be inclusive and accessible to people of all ages and artistic skill levels, and the space was designed to encourage conversation and connection. To highlight Kaleidoscope’s purpose of building community through creativity, we coordinated a collaborative paper mosaic, allowing each participant to create their own tile, which they could then add to the large community mosaic.

With a high engagement rate, the mosaic activity fulfilled its goal of informing and educating the public about Kaleidoscope Creative Community; additionally, the activity was designed to be a shareable experience, leading to wider reach and visibility on social media. Overall, the event was a huge success and led to an increase in brand awareness, social media following and engagement, and event attendance.

What’s in a name?

Kaleidoscope: more commonly known as an optical device that uses mirrors to create symmetrical patterns from colored objects and less commonly known as a group of butterflies.

I’m proposing another outlook. Kaleidoscope: an ever shifting collection of what makes me, me and what makes you, you. An opportunity to look at each other through a different light and be a little more understanding. A place to come together to play, explore, learn, and create.

Every time we have an event, a different collection of people, experiences, and art mediums/experience levels comes together to create a magical creative experience. Everyone is encouraged to come as they are to create and connect in a space with no judgements, expectations, or pressure.

Our Kaleidoscope is ever changing and ever growing.
